How to Winterize Your Sprinklers in Granite Bay

In colder states, "winterizing" means blowing out every pipe with an air compressor. In Granite Bay, it's simpler — but the goal is the same: protect the parts that sit above ground and can freeze and crack when a cold snap rolls through.

When to do it

Aim for late fall, before the first hard freeze — typically sometime in November around here. You don't need to rush it in early October, but you don't want to be caught by a surprise cold night in December with an unprotected backflow device.

The Granite Bay winterizing checklist

• Shut off the water to the irrigation system at the main irrigation valve so no water is sitting under pressure.
• Turn the controller to "off" or "rain mode" so it stops running through winter. (Most modern controllers keep your programming saved.)
• Protect the backflow device. This above-ground brass assembly is the most freeze-vulnerable part of your whole system — wrap it with insulation or a cover. A cracked backflow is the classic expensive spring repair.
• Drain what you can. Open any drain valves to let water out of the lines that could freeze.
• Insulate exposed pipes and valves in unprotected spots.

Don't over-winterize either

Because our winters are mild, most Granite Bay homeowners don't need a full compressor blow-out — that's overkill for our climate and can even damage components if done wrong.
